To investigate the effect of circulating PRL on human mammary cells, two cell lines, MCF-7 and T47D, were selected as the target cells. After PRL was added to the culture medium, cell growth and cell cycle progression were analyzed. The results indicated that there were remarkable differences between the two cell lines. In MCF-7 cells, PRL induced cell proliferation and enhanced the transition of cells from G(1) to S phase. In contrast, in T47D cells, PRL inhibited proliferation and blocked the cells in G(1). These differences may be due to the fact that they are responsive to different types of signal transduction.
