It stars Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, an Indian who seeks vengeance for his father's death. The movie also stars Madhuri Dixit as Jessica, with Shafi Inamdar as Thakur Ajit Singh. It was a remake of the 1979 Tamil film Agni Natchathiram which starred Kamal Haasan in the lead role.The film was remade again in 2012 under the same name starring Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt. The music of the film was composed by R.D. Burman and Viju Shah. The lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi, Kumaar, Kausar Munir and Shailendra. Upon release, this film set the record for being highest-grossing Bollywood directorial debut. In May 2015, "Agneepath" became the third highest grossing Bollywood film of all time. In June 2015, the film was officially remade in Telugu as "Nayak". In 2016, a sequel to both the 2012 and 1990 versions is being shot simultaneously titled Agneepath: The Return which will star Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt.
